Job Description
The Senior R&D Manager for Business Development is responsible for supporting the business development projects. Along with cross functions, this individual will lead and influence the BD project objectives for the R&D workstream.
Job Duties
- Take responsibility for all R&D aspects of each business development project by a) conducting or overseeing due diligence and integration activities, b) building a functional plan for each project to ensure that functional risks are identified, and actions are planned, and c) securing necessary approvals from R&D/regional leadership for due diligence reports and integration strategy/plans.
- Evaluate potential acquisition target assets (companies, product lines and/or technologies) and represent R&D during due diligence activities and integration planning. Present finding and propose recommendations on the strategic fit and next steps to the Executive Team and the Acquisition Decision Committee
- Represent Research and Development as the global liaison between R&D and the Business Development (BD) team
- Possess strong understanding of therapeutic/endoscopic space(s) in order to support business development efforts and growth strategy of Olympus.
- Resource planning and intra-R&D coordination: Maintain an up-to-date view of all projects in the business development pipeline. Plan for functional support by estimating timing and resource requirements per project while collaborating with regional R&D Teams. Communicate and coordinate needs within the function to identify and obtain adequate support at global and regional levels.
- Support continuous improvement with Tool & Process Development
- Build and maintain a network of resources in all regions, across all businesses and divisions.
- Functional and Regional Alignment: Coordinate with global and regional R&D teams to ensure efforts are aligned, obtain approvals, and assign resources
- Training & coaching: Develop personal expertise and train R&D personnel on BD tools & processes. Coach colleagues involved in BD projects how to effectively participate in due diligence and integration planning and execution.
Job Qualifications
Required:
- Bachelor’s degree in Engineering required.
- Minimum of 12 years professional experience, minimum of 5 years functional management leading medical device research and development teams (diverse / global business experience strongly preferred) and launching medical devices globally.
- Travel: Some national and international travel required (up to 25%).
- Language: English (required), second language preferred (Japanese, Chinese, Spanish, German).

- Possesses a deep understanding of product development processes and systems.
- Demonstrated ability to work cross-functionally.
- Demonstrated ability to lead programs/projects. Has sense of passion, drive and perseverance to accomplish goals. Excellent team player.
- Prior working experience in business development teams pre deal through integration.
- Excellent leadership and interpersonal skills, including the ability to work across cultures and personality types.
- High business acumen and ability to learn quickly and adapt to new circumstances.
- Excellent communication skills, both verbal and written. Ability to quickly distil complex information into actions/recommendations.
- Excellent ability to read and influence senior decision makers bridging organizational complexities.
- Strong project management skills, including planning, budgeting, and resource management.
- Excellent understanding of the typical functional roles and responsibilities within a Global R&D organization.
- Demonstrated experience in leading cross functional development programs from concept to commercialization.
- Practical understanding of global regulatory/quality standards and requirements.
