Job Description
The Senior Human Factors Engineer is an individual contributor acting to support the Digital Unit in launching products on time through the regulatory process. The Senior Engineer will lead or contribute to efforts to define user and product requirements, collaborate with product managers and other core team members on project execution strategy, timelines and costs, lead product design and user requirement efforts, execute product feasibility testing, technical risk reduction planning, verification and validation testing strategy and testing efforts, lead or contribute to design analysis testing, and ultimately work with our system engineer to produce documentation for our regulatory submissions.
The Human Factors Engineer is expected to take costs, technical risk, and user needs into consideration while contributing to product design. They must fully understand medical device design control requirements,
Have experience lading technical development efforts, and be effective at communicating advancements and issues to all levels of the organization.
Job Duties
- Support multiple new product development projects and assume responsibility for project execution and quality.
- Human Factors subject matter expert on project teams providing project support and Human Factors guidance.
- Manage the execution and reporting of human factors activities including those completed by vendors.
- Ensure that human capabilities and limitations are properly reflected in the system, safety risk and user needs requirements.
- Author comprehensive human factors engineering documentation including protocols and reports (e.g., Usability engineering reports) and support the design and execution of Human Factors activities such as formative and summative human factors studies for physical and digital medical devices, instructions and packaging.
- Drive Human Factors Engineering requirements in the design process.
- Coach and mentor others in Human Factors practices and processes.
Job Qualifications
Required:
- BS degree or equivalent in human factors engineering, engineering psychology, related engineering or life science discipline. MS or other advanced degree desired.
- Minimum 5 years of professional experience conducting human factors in medical device product development.
- Strong collaboration skills and the ability to work across functions.
- Strong technical problem-solving skills including VOC translation to Design Specs, Human Factors processes, managing usability studies (i.e. Formative and Summative), and Use Risk Management.
- Strong working knowledge of FDA and IEC regulatory expectations for Human Factors.
- Proven track record in New Product Development with a focus in Human Factors, ensuring the design and testing of robust customer focused usability features, Concept through Post-Launch.
- Strong overlap with ET zone work hours, and some ability to overlap with CET zone work hours.
- Traveling to visit Olympus sites and customers is a part of this job. Expect to travel about once a quarter, with some international travel.
Preferred:
- Well organized, flexible self-starter, team-oriented and excellent at prioritization and multitasking.
- Certified Associate or Full Human Factors, Ergonomics or User Experience Professional (AHFP, AUXP, AEP, CHFP, CPE, CUXP)
