Job Description

We are currently looking for a co-op to join our R&D Shared Services Engineering team in our Westborough, MA office. This program will run from July 2023 through December 2023. This is a full-time opportunity involving 35-40 hours per week. This position requires on-site work. While onsite, this co-op will follow all applicable COVID-19 work safety guidelines. 

The R&D Engineering Co-op is responsible for supporting engineering projects and lab operations for both the New Product Development and Sustaining Engineering teams.   Specifically, the R&D Engineering Co-op will provide testing support for all projects assigned, and ensure test data and observations are accurately reported, ensure traceability of test samples, and assist the Engineering team as needed. The R&D Engineering Co-op may also support lab operations, and assist with the maintenance of equipment (e.g., calibration, etc.), ensure the lab (and lab practices) are safe, ensures the lab is compliant with applicable SOP’s and Policy’s and ensure the lab is clean/organized. As the R&D Engineering Co-op will be involved with the testing efforts required to establish device quality and performance, it is critically important that the R&D Engineering Co-op is attentive to detail, complies with test methods and Standard Operating Procedures, and accurately records data & observations.

Job Duties

As an Olympus co-op, you will work with a department on projects related to your area of interest or study.  You will contribute to our mission by helping your department complete key projects.

Potential duties will include:

  • Support all testing efforts on programs assigned. Maintains attentiveness for testing abnormalities, trends, and external influences.
  • Partners with engineering staff on project needs (e.g., supports test method development, acquisition of test samples/testing equipment & supplies, maintains sample traceability, etc.).
  • Records and communicates all test data and testing observations with a high accuracy to program technical leads and management as required.  Ensures compliance with testing protocols, test methods, and/or standards.
  • Supports lab operations, such as maintenance of equipment, coordinating & scheduling calibration services, ordering supplies, quoting of test apparatus, as well as ensuring lab is a safe environment, kept clean / orderly, etc.
  • Capable of collaborating with other laboratory resources
  • Capable of working closely with Senior technicians and Engineers to efficiently plan their time and advancing their testing efforts / responsibilities.
  • Seeks to understand and if possible, improve test methods and practices.
  • Able to read and interpret test methods with high attention to detail.
  • Capable of working on a team with a willingness to help or support other efforts.
  • All additional duties as directed.

Job Requirements

REQUIRED QUALIFICATIONS:

* Must be enrolled in a full time undergraduate or graduate degree program at an accredited 4-year institution.

* Must complete freshman year before the internship begins and graduate after the internship ends.

* Must not now or in the future require immigration-related sponsorship.**

* Must possess excellent analytical and organizational skills.

* Must be proficient and have practical knowledge in Microsoft Word, Excel, and PowerPoint.

* Must be able to work well within a team and independently at times with limited guidance.

 

PREFERRED QUALIFICATIONS:

* Preferred fields of study include Manufacturing, Mechanical, Biomedical, Industrial, or Electrical Engineering, or related science degree.

* Previous technical / lab experience

* Capable of being trained on and operating testing equipment with strict adhesion to test methods required.

* Capable of accurately logging testing observations in laboratory notebook and describe abnormalities to engineers and supervisor.

* Technical aptitude for operating testing equipment and the capability of envisioning / understanding product failure modes and technical causes & effects a plus.

* Good physical dexterity to manipulate test samples.

* Capable of collaborating with engineering team to ensure a thorough understanding of the testing objectives and collaborating on the testing plan to support these objectives.

* Capable of maintaining control of test samples (i.e., labelling all product appropriately) is mandatory.
