Job Description

As a Principal Front-End Software Engineer on the Design Systems team, you will be a senior contributor responsible for designing, developing, and maintaining components, patterns and other aspects related to Olympus’ Enterprise Design System. You will be relied upon to provide technical leadership to the team, participate in setting coding standards, and mentoring junior engineers. You will also be expected to be a proficient individual contributor who can jump in and support project deliverables and find solutions that meet goals and schedules.

To succeed in this role, the Principal Front-End Software Engineer must be a technical leader who communicates effectively with a diverse group of stakeholders to meet the needs of the business.  They must be highly collaborative, organized, can manage competing priorities, and able to adapt to rapidly changing requirements.  They will be passionate about technology and design systems and have a strong desire to mentor and coach others.  They will also be an excellent communicator, able to articulate complex technical concepts to both technical and non-technical audiences.

Job Duties

  • Be a key contributor in designing the overall architecture of the design system to ensure scalability, maintainability, and extensibility.
  • Provide technical guidance and leadership to the team, setting coding standards, and mentoring junior engineers.
  • Collaborate with cross-functional teams such as product managers, designers, and other engineers to gather requirements and ensure alignment with business goals.
  • Conduct thorough code reviews to ensure code quality, adherence to design system standards, and best practices.
  • Write high-quality, reusable code components for the design system and ensure their integration with various platforms and frameworks.
  • Create and maintain comprehensive documentation for the design system, including usage guidelines, API documentation, and best practices.
  • Implement and maintain automated testing frameworks to ensure the reliability and stability of the design system components.
  • Optimize the performance of design system components to ensure smooth user experiences across different devices and platforms.
  • Continuously improve the design system based on feedback, industry best practices, and emerging technologies to keep it relevant and effective over time.
  • Communicate the benefits, capabilities, and roadmap of the design system to stakeholders across the organization, advocating for its adoption and usage.

Job Qualifications


  • College degree in Software Engineering, Computer Science, Electrical Engineering or related fields.
  • Minimum of 10 years Software Engineering experience.
  • Minimum of 5 years of experience building responsive, user-centric web apps.
  • Experience using JavaScript, TypeScript.
  • Experience using React.
  • Experience using CSS.
  • Experience building and publishing UI libraries to NPM.
  • Experience building custom component with React.
  • Experience using Git.
  • Familiarity with Webpack, Vite, Rollup.



  • Software medical device experience preferred.
  • Background in Agile Development methodologies.
  • Familiarity with Microsoft Azure Cloud including DevOps areas of pipelines for CICD.
  • Experience with using of CSS-In-JS (Styled Components, Panda CSS).
  • Familiarity with design tools such as Figma.
  • Familiarity with using UI libraries (Ant Design, Radix UI) and Headless UI Components
  • Familiarity with using design tokens (CSS Variables).
  • Demonstrated capabilities to work effectively in cross-functional areas.
  • Experience working in global, matrixed organizations.
  • Understanding of product lifecycle, including development, design transfer, release, and support.
  • Experience and awareness of system engineering approaches and processes.
  • Excellent written and verbal communication skills.  Ability to clearly communicate expectations, provide clear and honest feedback, and identify areas for improvement.  Ability to produce clear presentations and to speak in front of an audience.
