Job Description

The Vice President of Strategy & Portfolio Management will be responsible for the Strategic Business Planning for the Olympus Medical Business. This will include working with both the Endoscopic Solutions Division (ESD) and the Therapeutic Solutions Division (TSD) Executive Leadership teams to shape their Divisional Global strategy, drive portfolio planning and management through the assessment of business opportunities (organic development, business development, early stage opportunities) that will lead to growth for Olympus in both the Endoscopic and Therapeutic field. The candidate in collaboration with his/her team will also collaborate closely with the individual Global Business Unit Leaders across each segment to ensure that a clear short and long-term strategy is defined for each area and that the portfolio decisions are aligned with their strategy. Recommendations will be made to the Divisional Executive Committees regarding overall key areas of focus, growth and investment targets and synergies between Divisions.
As the leader for Strategy and Portfolio, this position is accountable for managing the framework, process, tools and system for the Strategic Business Planning Process (SBP) at a global level for both Medical Divisions. This includes developing the short and long-term vision for the evolution of this framework and the continuous collaboration with the Global Program Management Office, Finance and the Corporate Headquarters to ensure that the evolution and continuous improvement is designed in full alignment. This effort involves developing the right tools and skills within the department but also developing the data, analytics and competencies to support the business.
The candidate will also have direct responsibility for the Global Market Intelligence and Customer Insights functions and will be responsible for the transformation of these teams and the digitalization strategy of the department.


Job Duties

In a typical day, you will:


* Recruit, develop and retain talent within the ESD and TSD Strategy & Portfolio Management, MI and CI team. In this capacity the candidate will be responsible for attracting and retaining a diverse, highly experienced and qualified staff and for providing coaching, direction and personal development for direct/indirect report employees.


* Develop his/her team members to directly lead early stage strategy defining projects and initiatives to minimize the reliance on either external consulting support or the very few skilled players within the organization.


* Maintain responsibility for the governance, compliance, transparency and continuous improvement of the Strategic Business Planning Process (SBP) including BU Strategy, Divisional Strategy and associated portfolio and 5 year Strategic Plan at the BU, Divisional and Olympus Medical level.


* Maintain responsibility for the effective implementation of the Portfolio Management System across TSD in Phase 1 and ESD in Phase 2. This will require full alignment and heavy collaboration with Finance and the PMO.


* In collaboration with the Global Head of Business Leaders for each Division, this role is responsible for the analysis and projection of the overarching TSD and ESD expected growth and the assessment of risk adjustment. 


* Lead regular Strategic Business Planning sessions with TSD and ESD Executive Leadership to provide updates on results to date, alignment to established targets and strategy and also to lead discussions regarding refine areas of focus, synergies, potential adjacencies.


* In collaboration with the Divisional Heads and COO recommend targets including required product portfolio balance and proposed mix for a healthy and balanced product portfolio to maximize the return on investment and utilization of resources.


* Directs and leads the Global Market Intelligence and Customer Input team.  This includes continuing the journey to optimize the acquisition of data in collaboration with the regions and Business Units, standardizing the analytics of the data, optimize the right cadence of data “refresh” and prioritizing investment on data gaps based on strategic direction, risk and impact. Additionally, together with their team recommend the right tools, systems and mechanisms to efficiently store and share the data at a global level.


* Provide the right framework and best practices from a MI perspective to ensure that the right depth and level of research based on industry best practices is being applied when developing the strategies and when evaluating internal and external opportunities. This includes identifying market data, research needs, VOC inputs and methodologies to support the right level of information across all business segments.


* Ensure the availability of resources and information necessary to support and operate the strategic business plan across the regions and for both Medical Divisions.


* He/She will develop key reporting metrics and dashboards to ensure alignment across all regions and functions as well as with corporate stakeholders.  This position will be responsible for continuing to review business practices and reporting tools, vehicles, metrics that can be improved to increase productivity and efficiencies across ESD and TSD trying to optimize harmonization while ensuring business needs are met.


* Perform other related duties as assigned.

Job Requirements



* Bachelor's Degree in Engineering or Business. Advanced Business degree required.


* Minimum 15 years + work experience in the Medical Device Industry.


* Ability to travel domestically and internationally 30% of the time.




* Proven experience in Strategic Marketing, Corporate Strategy,  Portfolio Management.


* Strong preference given to a candidate with multi-function experience including commercial and downstream marketing.


* Must demonstrate strategic capabilities with strengths in critical thinking and innovative problem solving skills; financial and strategic.


* Strong people leadership skills with a track record of effectively managing cross functional and multi-site teams.


*  Excellent communication skills including the ability to persuasively deliver presentations to all levels of the organization.


* Excellent decision making skills.


* Proven ability to collaborate and negotiate across functions and with all levels of the organization with experience and the ability to drive and influence change.


* Ability to manage multiple departments, initiatives and competing priorities in a fast-paced, ever-changing and evolving work environment.


* Experience working in a global organization across multiple cultures is a plus.
