Job Description

The Principal Engineer maintains responsibility for performing and/or leading all aspects of research, technology, and product development including technical planning, feasibility studies, proof of concept device development, verification and validation. The primary responsibilities of the position are defining proof of concept technology specifications through collaboration with marketing and other functions, physicians, and a developed understanding of targeted disease states, collaborating with product development teams to establish design inputs, to evolve test methods and protocols suitable for verification testing, and to support design validation studies. Other activities include evaluating technology concept alternatives with consideration for cost, technical risk, reliability and User Needs, and writing patent applications in collaboration with patent agents. He/ she must fully understand medical device design control requirements, be able to effectively manage concurrent research and technology development projects, and work effectively in a cross functional team. May serve as a core or extended team member on research, technology or product development projects. Organized, collaborative, and able to effectively coordinate the activities of multiple support staff including interns, coop students, fellows, technicians, and other engineers. Maintains detailed documentation throughout all phases of research, technology, and product development. May provide leadership and direction to Engineering Technicians and mentor less experienced engineers within and across OSTA sites in best practices for the use of engineering tools and methods.

Job Duties

In a typical day, you will:

* Provides technical leadership on product and technology development projects. 

* Prepares and delivers research and technology presentations and demonstrations to internal and external audiences. 

* Accountable for all aspects of research and technology development such as:
- Requirements creation/documentation, ideation / prototyping, design / development, technical risk mitigation, verification testing and reports, design validation studies, supports risk management documentation, design reviews, and statistical evaluations. 

* Develops engineering solutions, investigates competing technologies, and collaborates with Olympus Patent Attorneys to secure a strong IP portfolio. 

* Ensures research and technology concepts are cost effective, manufacturable, and are tested through well thought out test plans to ensure they can effectively be used in product development efforts. 

* Consults with the Sales, Marketing, clinicians, and others to understand disease states, identify needs, and identify technology options to address them.

* Manages, directs and supports suppliers involved in research and technology development. This includes outside design and/or development partners. 

* Helps prepare and acts as a consultant to marketing on technical brochures, training programs, and technical presentations to customers, field service, and the sales force.

* Develops product and technology verification and validation testing requirements, testing protocols and reports to ensure they meet target expectations and specifications. 

* Acts as a consultant to other departments including Sales and Marketing. 

* Maintain responsibility for planning, scheduling, and executing all assigned projects. 

* Perform all other essential duties as directed.

Job Requirements


* Bachelor’s degree in Biomedical, Electrical Engineering or similar, advanced degree preferred.

* Minimum 9 years or 8 years with MS or 5 with PhD.


* Experience in statistical analysis package (Stat Ease, Minitab) preferred.

* Experience writing firmware and software.

* Proficient with the creation and critical review of engineering drawing and specification documentation.

* Proficient in Microsoft Windows environment, Outlook, excel, Powerpoint, MS project, Simulation/CAD/CAM software.

* Must be able to solve complex problems and provide guidance to other scientists and engineers.

* Must be able to work with ambiguity and use good judgement in making decisions.

* Able to balance risk and opportunities.

* Must be able to collaborate effectively with others, works well within cross-functional teams and across multiple sites, as applicable.

* Effective presenter of technical information and comfortable interacting with healthcare providers.

* Must be able to manages resources and drives for results, effectively managing projects and timelines.

* Must be able to communicate effectively at all levels, both verbally and in writing.

* Strong presentation skills and the ability influence.

* Inspires and motivates others and provides work direction.

* Experience designing optical coupling systems for high-power lasers preferred.

* Experience developing spectroscopy products preferred.

* Experience developing connected devices preferred.
