Job Description

The Executive Director of Strategy for Minimally Invasive Surgery will provide direction and be responsible for Strategy Development, Business Case Analysis, Investment, Portfolio, Operating Model and Commercial Channel Recommendations within the Minimally Invasive Solutions space and that span across the Medical Business. This position supports both Endoscopic Solutions Division and the Therapeutic Solutions Division as a shared service to ensure alignment of priorities and to have a holistic view of integrated solutions. 
This position will report into the VP of Minimally Invasive Surgery and will be the primary strategic advisor who is ultimately responsible for executing the recommendations from the Steering Committee and the Strategic Business Planning process for both the short and long-term strategic plan. 


The candidate will be responsible for guiding the emergent innovation process with the cross-functional team (inclusive of market development, clinicians, technical experts, etc).  He/she will be responsible for prioritizing the action plans based on available resources and budget, defining the goals and metrics to ensure rapid experimentation, implementing in-market experimentation, and ensuring the team’s overall success by gaining access to capabilities throughout the greater Olympus organization.  

Part of the scope of this role will include directly leading large-scale strategic initiatives (organic & inorganic)  that are complex in nature and span across Divisions and Clinical Spaces.

Job Duties

* Aid in efforts to recruit, mentor, and develop Cross Functional team members and contributors for all task forces under MIS

* Accountable for the overall MIS strategy development and recommendations to the Executive Committee and other key stakeholders

* Accountable to work with the Divisional leaders and Executive Committee as well as the pertinent BU leaders to identify key priority areas of focus and help frame the overarching strategy as well as the key priorities underneath

* Maintain responsibility for to drive the task forces and teams supporting the multiple initiatives within MIS umbrella to build business cases and ensure connectivity and consistency 

* Maintain responsibility to manage the MIS portfolio and develop recommendations on how to prioritize investments and resources 

* Establish the right operating and communication model to ensure that there is good alignment between MIS initiatives and in-flight activities within the Divisions and Business Units. 

* Heavy collaboration with Divisional Strategy & Portfolio Management leaders and Global Medical PMO to develop the appropriate linkage with the Divisional Strategic Business Planning process and governance and ensure consistency of RACI, process, tools and approach

* High level understanding of the overall ESD and TSD markets and deep understanding of the key areas of focus for growth in MIS keeping current on new technologies, trends, economics, policies in the spaces and regions that we play 

* Ensure that there is clarity in our overall Olympus functional skills set and capabilities gaps to execute on the plans and strategies laid out 

* Collaborate with corporate planning and investor relations to ensure that we are providing the right information and inputs for them to build the TSD Corporate

* Collaborate continuously with Business Development team to ensure alignment of priorities for review and prioritization of external opportunities

* Collaborate continuously with Market Intelligence team to align on data gaps and prioritize and harmonize areas of focus for primary and secondary market research to be conducted 

* Take ownership as the leader for large scale early stage initiatives as required

Job Requirements


* Bachelor’s degree (Engineering) and MBA or Master’s degree equivalent required

* A minimum of 10 years of progressive experience in medical device upstream and downstream marketing, strategy development is required. PNL management experience a plus.

* Minimum of 5 years of experience in people management/development


* Travel <35% (domestic and international) 



* Excellent communication skills, verbal and written with advanced presentation skills 

* Strong interpersonal and relationship building skills

* Advanced business acumen with mastery of business analytics, business case development, and P&L forecasting

* Decisive when confronted with strategic uncertainty

* Ability to successfully lead and influence cross-functional and cross-cultural teams with proven track record managing a service organization

* Ability to synthesize data and reports and to masterfully distill information pivoting the content and output depending on the audience


*  Strategic acumen with the ability to help and lead others through analysis and decision making process with financial and strategic acumen and the ability to distill information relevant to upper management

* Detail oriented and experienced in creating standard work, processes or systems

* Skilled at decisions making and balancing competing priorities for self and others
