The Executive Director of Manufacturing Engineering has responsibility for the manufacturing engineering group, leading new product development initiatives, legacy production management activities and service & repair across all OSTA sites.  The Executive Director develops and improves processes as required by the business, meeting project and product cost and delivery targets.  The Executive Director is responsible for the proactive development and introduction of engineering practices in accordance with regulatory requirements and the business strategy of the Company as well as providing guidance to the engineering staff.  The Executive Director will also work across Olympus organization to develop and implement best practices that drive efficiency gains.

Job Duties

* Direct supervisory responsibility for Managers, Engineers, Technicians and contract staff.
 


* Conduct regular department and one-on-one meetings with staff to resolve issues, maintain engagement/focus, and share updates on project and activities.

 

* Develop skill sets of assigned staff and build cross functional skill development plans to ensure complete skill sets of teams are developed to help improve the ability/ mobility of assignments of work on projects to meet functional objectives, OSTA business objectives and employees’ professional goals.

 

* Coordinate with leadership colleagues across various functions to foresee/understand critical project activities and to enable them to manage team resources and tasks to avoid critical path slippage.

 

* Support Olympus Lean Production System efforts on new and legacy product lines.

 

* Coach and mentor  project leaders, core and extended team members on new product development and transfer projects.

 

* Update senior management on operational performance of the manufacturing processes developed as part of a new product team.

 

* Responsible for the development and validation of capable production processes that meet operational objectives.

 

* Drive DFM discussions with R&D and Production Technology on all new products including exploratory phase projects.

 

* Support the production line with continuous improvements, including line layout and material replenish. 

 

* Evaluate all available internal and external technologies including manufacturing equipment, and Materials while working with Production Technology team.

 

* Select and implement appropriate technologies that result in lower manufacturing cost, lower process variability and higher manufacturing capability.

 

* Prioritizes and manages execution of multiple departmental and new product development projects.

 

* Oversees selection of manufacturing processes that meet business goals.

 

* Works with other  leaders cross-functionally to standardize, leverage and implement engineering tools and establish best-demonstrated practices.

 

* Develop and control the validation and verification strategy for legacy products as new equipment is acquired or as process improvements are implemented.

 

* To advise personnel in product and process validation and verification activities and train in best practices for medical device manufacture.

 

* Provides engineering resources in support all necessary projects and activities.

 

* Own and drive all operations and process risk management documentation.

 

* Ensure effective Engineering input to Manufacturing Review Board (MRB) activity.

 

* Member of multi-Site Leadership Teams responsible for overall budget and Site performance.

 

* Drive proactive behavior within the engineering team.

 

* Work with cross site leadership in developing and standardizing best engineering tools and practices.

 

* Responsible for Cost Savings deliverables as well as BCP program.

Job Requirements

REQUIRED QUALIFICATIONS:

 

* Bachelor's degree in Mechanical/Electrical/Biomedical Engineering or equivalent required.

 

* Minimum of 15 years of medical device industry experience with a proven track record of successful product development within a regulated environment.

 

* Minimum of ten 15 years of management experience with multiple direct reports required.

 

* Experience working in a multidisciplinary team setting bringing products from conception through market release and beyond.

 

* Expertise with the development of complex and precision mechanical or opto-mechanical devices, and electronic medical devices.

 

* Experience partnering with external suppliers for the development of new processes and technologies as demonstrated with commercialized products.

 

PREFERRED QUALIFICATIONS:

 

* An advanced degree (M.S. or Ph.D.) in any of these fields is strongly preferred.


* Experience managing within a matrix organization preferred.


* Proven team leader and manager.

 

* Wide technical knowledge base

 

* Strong Analytical Skills and abilit  to think both logically and creatively and possess sound reporting abilities

 

* Working knowledge of core engineering tools.  For example:  6-sigma, Failure Mode Effects & Analysis (FMEA), Risk Analysis, Process Mapping, Standard Work Instructions, Lean Manufacturing, Manufacturing Work Instruction Creation, Design of Experiments (DOE) methods, Process Characterization, Verification & Validation activities 

 

* Demonstrated project management techniques and approaches

 

* Efficient Knowledge of basic software, including MS Office, Visio and Solidworks.
