Job Description

This position reports to the Global General Counsel ("GC") and leads the global businesses of Olympus Corporation and its subsidiaries worldwide on a wide variety of intellectual property legal matters. This position is responsible for providing legal advice to Olympus affiliates in the Americas and other global business centers on intellectual property issues including intellectual property litigation, licensing, risk mitigation, mergers & acquisitions, and strategy. This position is responsible for oversight of intellectual property legal matters in multiple jurisdictions including the Americas, Europe, Middle East and Africa, China, Asia Pacific, and Japan.

Job Duties

* Providing leadership of team of in-house lawyers and other IP professionals.

* Providing strategic counsel to the Business regarding the competitive IP landscape for current global product portfolio and future plans, and substantive issues of IP law, strategy and enforcement.

* Partnering with the Company’s R&D IP teams and the local IP team of the Olympus affiliate to assist and counsel in the development of policies, procedures, product manuals, legal guidance documents, tools and training materials.

* Providing legal support for patent, trademark, copyright and trade secret matters, including supporting the business in interactions with international patent and trademark offices, and assisting in obtaining patents, trademarks and copyrights that effectively protect key products and services.

* Leading litigation (directly or in conjunction with outside counsel) relating to intellectual property matters, and building/maintaining relationships with key outside counsel worldwide while managing external legal costs.

* Providing legal advice to Olympus affiliates and global business centers on intellectual property issues including freedom to operate, intellectual property clearance, litigation management, business development, due diligence, design guidance and contracts, changes in intellectual property laws and how they impact business practices.

* Providing advice and counsel on day-to-day transactional and contract needs.

* Identifying and effectively addressing intellectual property risks in each product area and assisting with strategies to minimize such risks.

* Leading efforts to standardize intellectual property legal processes in keeping with best practices.

* Providing training and guidance on intellectual property topics to personnel to enhance the management and protection of Olympus IP.

* Building strategic partnerships with Business and R&D teams, as well as outside counsel, to further organizational objectives.

 

 

"The anticipated compensation range for this position is 242,587.00 to 388,139.00 USD annually and the compensation offered will depend on the candidate’s qualifications."

Job Requirements

REQUIRED QUALIFICATIONS:

Juris Doctorate or an equivalent degree from an accredited law school.

 

* Technical undergraduate degree in engineering or hard science. Advanced technical degree is preferred.

 

* Active license in good standing to practice law in the US.

 

* Registered for IP practice in the US.

 

* Minimum 10-15 years of experience in intellectual property law, including law firm and in-house corporate experience and international litigation experience.

 

PREFFERED QUALIFICATIONS:

 

At least 5 years of experience in research and development is preferred.
