Job Description

The R&D Manager will lead our R&D sustaining engineering team to maintain released products. This position will have responsibility to oversee various aspects of sustaining engineering activities such as mechanical and electrical design changes, product testing, coordinating tasks, and resourcing teams. The ideal candidate must fully understand medical device design control requirements and be able to effectively staff, prioritize and execute programs in accordance with business needs, and provide regular updates as required. In addition, this position will partner with cross functional leaders to plan and support the business and other Olympus R&D Centers.

Job Duties

  • Responsible for the recruitment, hiring, and performance management & development of R&D Sustaining team.
  • Direct supervisory responsibility for Engineers, Designers and/or Technicians, who act as core team and extended team members on sustaining engineering projects and/or development efforts.
  • Provides support for the overall sustaining, development, and other research activities of the dept.
  • Deliver on product line extensions and maintenance of business projects on time, schedule, and budget.
  • Participates in regular meetings with project teams to resolve issues and risks, to maintain R&D staff. engagement/focus, and to communicate technical development updates and plans with all team members.
  • Coordinates with project managers to foresee/understand critical project activities and to enable them to manage team resources and tasks to avoid critical path slippage.
  • Partners with project team members outside of R&D to maintain engagement and focus on joint project commitments and dependencies.
  • Ensures projects comply with regulatory requirements, including company design control procedures and that R&D activities are performed to governing standards (ISO9001, EN46001 FDA QSR’s).
  • Establish and foster strong collaborative relationships with external design/development, manufacturing partners and service providers.
  • Assigns projects to staff as appropriate with input from R&D leadership regarding priority.

Job Qualifications

Required:

  • B.S. Engineering (Mechanical, Chemical or Biomedical preferred) or equivalent experience and technical education, is required)
  • Minimum of 10 years of experience in development, design, and/or engineering of products & processes.
  • Minimum of 3 years functional management or technical project management


Preferred:

  • Strong medical device and cross-functional experience.
  • Excellent communication skills, both written and verbal, and within necessary attention to detail.
  • Capable of building strong relationships with internal customers, maintain awareness of their needs, responds promptly to customer requests, and appropriately manages customer expectations.
  • Must be capable of managing internal and external resources with varying priorities and responsibilities.
  • Must be capable to drive efficiency, results, and continuous improvement.
  • Experienced in product development, test method development, product testing, and Good Documentation Practices.
  • Knowledge of common manufacturing methodologies, technologies, and materials employed in medical devices.
  • Experienced in solving challenging and/or ambiguous engineering problems with scientific logic.
  • Ability to communicate complex technical concepts clearly and concisely.
  • Experienced in applying good judgement and making timely decisions while considerate of technical/business risks in a variety of situations.
  • Must be able to collaborate effectively with others, work well within cross-functional teams and across multiple sites, as applicable.
  • Effective leadership, motivational and team building skills with demonstrated decision-making capabilities.
  • Strong relationship building and ability to manage and motivate up and down the organization.
  • Self-motivated, hands-on and participatory with strong results orientation and ability to quickly establish appropriate priorities.
