Job Description

The Director of Engineering has responsibility for the engineering group; leading new product development initiatives and legacy production management activities. The Director develops and improves processes as required by the business meeting project and product cost and delivery targets. The Director is responsible for the proactive development and introduction of engineering practices in accordance with regulatory requirements and the business strategy of the Company as well as providing guidance to the engineering staff. As a member of the Plant Leadership Team the Director of Engineering is responsible and accountable for the overall strategic direction and performance of the Plant.

Job Duties

In a typical day, you will:

* Direct supervisory responsibility for Managers Engineers Technicians and contract staff.

* Maintain responsibility for OSTA wide departments projects or initiatives

* Conduct regular department and one-on-one meetings with staff to resolve issues maintain engagement/focus and share updates on project and activities.

* Develop skill sets of assigned staff to meet functional objectives OSTA business objectives and employees' professional goals.

* Coordinate with leadership colleagues across various functions to foresee/understand critical project activities and to enable them to manage team resources and tasks to avoid critical path slippage.

* Drive TPS/Lean Manufacturing efforts on new and legacy product lines.

* Coach and mentor project leaders core and extended team members on new product development and transfer projects.

* Update senior management on operational performance of the manufacturing processes developed as part of a new product team.

* Maintain responsibility for the development and validation of capable production processes that meet operational objectives.

* Drive DFM discussions with R&D and Production Technology on all new products.

* Support the production line with continuous improvements including line layout and material replenish.

* Evaluate all available internal and external technologies including manufacturing equipment and Materials.

* Select and implement appropriate technologies that result in lower manufacturing cost lower process variability and higher manufacturing capability.

* Prioritizes and manages execution of multiple departmental and new product development projects.

* Oversees selection of manufacturing processes that meet business goals.

* Works with other leaders cross-functionally to standardize leverage and implement engineering tools and establish best-demonstrated practices. 

* Develop and control the validation and verification strategy for legacy products as new equipment is acquired or as process improvements are implemented.

* To advise personnel in product and process validation and verification activities and train in best practices for medical device manufacture.

* Provides engineering resources in support all necessary projects and activities. 

* Own and drive all operations and process risk management documentation. 

* Ensure effective Engineering input to MRB activity.

* Member of Site Leadership Team responsible for overall budget and Site performance. 

* Drive proactive behavior within the engineering team. 

* Work with cross site leadership in developing and standardizing best engineering tools and practices. 

* Perform all other duties as assigned.

Job Requirements

REQUIRED QUALIFICATIONS:

* Bachelor's degree in Mechanical Engineering Electrical Engineering Biomedical Engineering Physics or equivalent.

​* A record of commercialized products for volume production is required.

PREFERRED QUALIFICATIONS:

* An advanced degree (M.S. or Ph.D.) in any of these fields is strongly preferred.

* Minimum of 15 years of industry experience with a proven track record of successful product development within a regulated product development environment.

* Minimum of 10 years of management experience with multiple direct reports.

* Experience working in a multidisciplinary team setting bringing products from conception through market release and beyond.

* Expertise with the development of complex and precision mechanical or opto-mechanical devices and electronic medical devices.

* Experience partnering with external suppliers for the development of new processes and technologies as demonstrated with commercialized products.

*Good team leader and manager wide technical knowledge base with above average problem analysis skills.

* Ability to think both logically and creatively and possess sound reporting abilities.

* Working knowledge of core engineering tools. For example: 6- sigma FMEA Risk Analysis Process Mapping Standard Work Instructions Lean Manufacturing Manufacturing Work Instruction Creation DOE methods Process Characterization Verification & Validation activities

* Demonstrated project management techniques and approaches.

* Efficient Knowledge of basic software including MS Office Visio and Solidworks.
