Job Description

The Executive Director R&D will oversee product and technology development efforts on behalf of the U.S. Development Center at the Westborough, MA facility. In this role, the Exec. Director will have management responsibility for engineering leaders and resources. In addition to driving our projects forward, the Exec. Director will promote heightened Systems Engineering approaches and methodologies, drive improvements to our product development processes and Standard Operating Procedures (SOP’s) where appropriate, and execute with a high degree of collaboration and professionalism.

 

This position will be an active member of the R&D Leadership Team and report directly to the Head of the U.S. Development Center (US-DC). Globally, the Exec. Director will participate in our R&D Global Matrix and represent the US-DC on global working groups as required. Therefore, it is required the Exec. Director possess strategic vision, insights and expertise in the areas of Product Development, Systems Engineering, and Quality Systems. More specifically, the Exec. Director will collaborate with our R&D CoE (Strategy, Excellence, and Solutions) team on efforts aimed at enhancing our product development practices, increasing efficiency, product predictability and global standardization (where appropriate).

 

The ideal candidate will be a hands-on technical leader with extensive experience in developing medical devices and systems (i.e., disposables and capital equipment), as well as be a device subject matter expert (SME) in Design Controls and product development systems for both Hardware and Devices (experience overseeing external SW/HW development is highly preferable). The candidate will have a proven track record of engineering leadership and possess the ability to provide project and engineering leadership while effectively driving for results.

Job Duties

* Leads Device and Systems Engineering R&D resources at the Westborough, MA facility.

 

* Must have good organization, communication, and leadership skills.

 

* Champions improvements to our design control / product development processes while enhancing the integration of Systems Engineering practices and project oversight.

 

* Builds effective relationships and supports staff and cross-functional leaders as appropriate to build an Olympus culture (Unity, Integrity, Empathy, Agility, Long-Term View).

 

* Provides leadership and mentoring to R&D staff to ensure product quality, reliability, and design robustness.

 

* Ideates and implements training programs where required to ensure successful / on time delivery of product development efforts.

 

* Maintains a vision for the Westborough resources and ensure competency of staff.

 

* Represents the US-DC within the R&D Global Matrix as required (while ensuring an aligned vision with the Head of the US-DC), and supports the various efforts of the R&D Global Matrix as required.

 

* Supports the development of an agile product development culture: flexible, efficient, and predictable.

 

* When urgent, capable of diving into project teams to resolve issues, provide support, or augment teams.

 

* Provides regular updates to R&D Leadership through weekly discussions and monthly updates.

 

* Recruits, develops, and capable of proactively managing staff performance and developing talent.

 

* Ability to be onsite when required (commuting distance, and onsite for staff meetings, projects meetings, and as agreed to with manager).

 

* Performs all other duties as assigned.

Job Requirements

REQUIRED QUALIFICATIONS:

 

* Bachelor’s degree in Engineering required (Elect. Eng. and advanced degrees strongly preferred).

 

* Minimum of 15 years leading medical device research and development teams (diverse / global business experience strongly preferred) in developing and launching complex medical devices & systems.

 

* Ability to travel domestically and internationally based on project and business needs.

 

* Extensive experience in developing and commercializing regulated devices under Design Control (21 CFR 820), ISO13485, ISO14791, etc.) and knowledge of applicable regulations.

 

* Good understanding of IEC60601 requirements and associated approval processes for obtaining safety certifications.

 

* Experience with IEC 62304 Software Standard.

 

PREFERRED QUALIFICATIONS:

 

* Proven ability to select, lead, retain and develop research and development leaders and engineers (device, electrical, systems, at a minimum).

 

* Possesses a deep understanding of product development processes and systems.

 

* Ability to mentor staff, motivate for results, and recognize and act on employee issues.

 

* Hands on leadership skills with a proven track record of product development successes for both disposable devices and systems (HW/SW).

 

* Ability to work effectively in a multicultural environment
